Tengen space combat game for the Sega Genesis
My first graphics job in the game industry was as a Production Design Assistant on a never-released Sega Genesis game from Tengen, loosely inspired by "Star Raiders" and other titles under the simple working title of "Space Hero". I did a number of animated spaceships and a few splash screens on this title, which was something of a pet in-house project for the team, which otherwise mostly did ports of Atari (the parent company of Tengen) arcade titles to the consoles.
Pioneer/Sierra anime adventure game for the PC
While at Sierra On-Line and working on Leisure Suit Larry, I noticed that Sierra had formed a joint venture with Pioneer. Familiar with Pioneer's popular and ever-growing set of anime titles, I realized that a great opportunity lay here to take advantage of Sierra's 2D adventure game engine and apply it to these licenses. With some invaluable advice from the Larry project's co-designer Don Munsil, I drafted a proposal for a game based on the popular property Tenchi Muyo! which piqued the interest of executives from both companies, and met with them to see what could be arranged. Pioneer was quite willing to contribute any relevant assets to the project, and it likely would have proceeded, but at that point Sierra changed ownership, and the change in staff resulted in a lack of further interest on Sierra's part during my remaining time with the company.
Microsoft flight combat simulation for the PC
More recently I worked as a contractor in 1998 on an unreleased Microsoft project as a User Interface designer. This was a bit of a stretch for me from my prior work and in the end I switched to doing some texture work for other projects in the department, which included some field digital photography to create realistic textures along with hand-painted ones. During the course of the contract, I also recieved training at Mesmer Animation Labs in SoftImage|3D. I would later return to Mesmer to learn the more recent version, SoftImage XSI 3 (see my Current & Recent Images gallery for more details).
